The Pilot Continuing Medical Education (CME)
EMS Recertification Program

A dynamic new way to continually improve your knowledge and skills and recertify at the same time!

•••••Learning is an on-going process that never truly ends. We are constantly learning new things every day, adding them to our knowledge base and understanding. Not everyone learns at the same pace, and both the subject and how it is presented to us have a great deal to do with what information we will retain and for what period of time. Many have actually defined learning as "..a long-lasting change in behavior". And while some individuals will seem to pick up new information almost effortlessly, most of us need to spend a little time with it, or see it a couple of times before we feel comfortable with it. We now know that the more we are exposed to a subject over a longer period of time, the more successful we will be in acquiring that knowledge. Thus the words "Continual" and "Continuing" have been added to our lexicons. By definition they mean "uninterrupted", and more accurately describe how all learning should take place. We never want to stop learning, and although classroom learning has it's time and place, it is by no means the only way we can learn. We now want to take the medical knowledge we acquired in our initial EMS education, and continue to build on it as we recertify.

•••••We hope that this new approach offers each participant a mixture of both essential information, and the ability to select a multitude of subject material delivered via mediums that interest us. This is the concept behind the Pilot CME EMS Recertification Program.

What is Continuing Medical Education (CME)?

What is the Pilot CME EMS Recertification Program?

•••••This program is designed to replace the traditional recertification courses and NYS Written and Practical Skills examinations, with a program that will combine many different types of medical education activities over the length of the participants certification period. Participants who successfully complete all the program elements will attain recertification by the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services (BEMS). For qualified participants, the program will combine twenty-four (24) hours of mandatory content, referred to as Core Curriculum, with and additional forty-eight (48) hours of elective or Non-Core Curriculum as the basis for their recertification. Built into the program are also provisions for verification of the participants EMS skills. When completed and properly documented to the BEMS in the required timeframe, participants will be granted recertification without having to take the traditional NYS BEMS Written and Practical skills examinations. Although for sampling purposes some candidates may be requested to take a Written exam by the BEMS, the results of the exam will have no bearing on the participants recertification.

Who can participate?

•••••Any NYS EMT who has a current certification, who has been in continual practice with an agency possessing a NYS BEMS Agency Code is eligible to participate. If you have an expired certification, or could not complete all program elements no less than 45 days from the expiration date on your certification card, you cannot participate. If your agency does not have a NYS BEMS Agency Code you are also ineligible to participate. Your agency may wish to contact the BEMS at (518) 474-0996 to find out more about the requirements to become an agency eligible for a NYS BEMS Agency Code.

•••••In order for an eligible participant to enroll in this program, their EMS Agency must register with the BEMS, and must have the approval of their AgencyÕs Medical Director. Participants will also register with the BEMS providing all other requirements are met.

What does it cost?

•••••Currently the BEMS only covers reimbursement for the Core Curriculum portion of the program. Reimbursement is identical to the system used for traditional EMS course funding of qualified students. A BEMS Course Sponsor can invoice the BEMS, or an EMS Agency can pay a Course Sponsor then seek reimbursement from the BEMS after their participant successfully completes the entire Core Curriculum.

•••••Non-Core Curriculum content in many cases may be acquired free of charge, dependent on the content chosen. In some cases Agencies may wish to have their participants attend Nationally rated CME programs, or have those same programs conducted locally. The Mobile Life Support Educational Services Division offers a number of these open programs each year, or can be contracted to provide them on-site to your Agency.

How do I enroll?

•••••Anyone interested in enrolling in this program should first contact the appropriate officer in their own Agency to discuss the program. We will be happy to send a representative to meet with your agency to discuss all aspects of the program to see if it is right for you. Just contact Ed Horton at (845) 562-4368 Ext. 242, or E-mail him at Ed@mobilelife.com to schedule a meeting.

Mobile Life Support Educational Services has developed an optional Internet version of the mandatory twenty-four (24) hour Core Curriculum, approved by the BEMS as a directed study program.
