Opportunities For Advancement

Once an individual becomes a MLSS staff member, he or she may become eligible to attend additional certification programs to advance their level of training, or after gaining more experience may be eligible for other positions throughout the company.

Some of these positions include:

Special Operations Response Team Member
Special Operations Response Team Members recieve specialized training to repond to any unusual incidents, prolonged crisis situations, and large fire/HAZMAT/rescue scenes to provide medical support and rehabilitation services to casualties and emergency service workers..

Field Training Officer
Field training officers are selected from the operational staff based on their demonstrated knowledge, skill, and ability to mentor others.  Staff selected for these positions, either at the BLS or ALS level, are provided additional training to enable them to work with and assist new staff through their field orientation.  A new employee will be assigned to a specific FTO and Paramedic Supervisor, who have the primary responsibility to prepare the new staff member for his/her assigned duties.

Paramedic Preceptor

A Paramedic Preceptor is an operational staff Paramedic who demonstrates excellent ALS knowledge, skill, and decision making capability.  In addition, these Paramedics must have a number of years experience at the Paramedic level, as well as with the company.  The Preceptor will be assigned Paramedic students from multiple Paramedic Programs with which we maintain clinical affiliations.  The Preceptor will monitor the progress of the student, and when appropriate will allow the student to implement any of the ALS skills they are authorized to attempt under the direct supervision of the preceptor. 

Paramedic Supervisor.
 
Paramedic Supervisors are selected from the field Paramedic staff based upon their overall knowledge and skill, as well as their decision making capabilities and the demonstrated ability to lead others.  Candidates making application for these position must meet certain prerequisites such as education, experience, knowledge of company policies and procedures, and skill proficiency levels.  Many of these candidates also have various instructor-level certifications.  All Paramedic Supervisor candidates must pass a rigorous interview process that is aimed at judging their leadership skills and decision making capabilities.  Currently there are fourteen (14)

Flight Paramedic
Paramedics seeking to attain the level of Flight Paramedic are selected from qualified staff Paramedics applying for the position.  Applicants must meet specific experience and company longevity requirements, as well as having a high percentage of successful implementation of numerous measured ALS interventions.  Candidates who are accepted for these positions (when available) receive additional training on aeromedical safety issues, flight procedures, and medical interventions.  They also receive training in hoist operations and scene insertion from the NYS Police Aviation Unit.

Tactical Emergency Medical Services (TEMS)

Instructorships.  MLSS has a very active Educational Division and qualified staff may be selected or apply for various instructor opportunities.  In addition to instructorships in First Aid, CPR, ACLS, PALS, PHTLS, GEMS, AMLS an d CEVO, we also sponsor qualified staff for NYS Certified Lab Instructors and Certified Instructor Coordinators.  Instructor credentialed staff are compensated for their participation in all educational offerings, and their participation is also acknowledged in their yearly staff performance reviews and their merit raise.
